James Prinsep the founder of the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal was, by any criterion, an extraordinary personality, He had a short life of only 40 years, but considering his variety of interests and his important contributions in diverse fields, it can with some confidence be stated that he was one of the greatest geniuses ever born. He was thus at the same time, a physicist, a chemist, an anthropologist, a numismatist, an epigraphist, a town-planner and an architect and one has not exhausted the list.
