Mostly Harmless
Mostly Harmless is the fifth and final novel written by Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series—famously described on its cover as “the fifth book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker’s Trilogy.” First published in 1992, it returns readers to the series’ universe of cosmic bureaucracy, improbable technology, Vogons, alternate realities, and dry British humour. The story finds Arthur Dent stranded alone on a remote planet, gradually adapting to a quiet life far from Earth and the galaxy’s usual chaos. Meanwhile, Ford Prefect learns that the Hitchhiker’s Guide has been taken over by a corporate publisher and transformed into a far more intrusive and unsettling device. Trillian is travelling through space as a journalist, and her teenage daughter, Random, becomes central to the novel’s intersecting storylines. Their paths eventually lead back toward Earth—the planet once dismissed in the Guide with the entry “Mostly Harmless.” Compared with the earlier, more openly playful installments, Mostly Harmless is often noted for its darker, more fatalistic mood. It still contains Adams’s characteristic wordplay and absurdity, but it also explores loneliness, parenthood, fate, exploitation, and the unsettling possibility that the universe may be indifferent to human hopes. It is best read after the first four books: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, and So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.
