Srimad Bhagavadgita Rahasya Or Karma Yoga Sastra 2 Vols.
This authoritative set of two books was originally written in Marathi by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, while serving a jail sentence. The first volume gives a summary of the opinions on the Gita by eminent personalities like : Vivekananda, Anne Besant, Aurobindo Ghosh, Madan M. Malvia, etc; then follows an introduction to the Hindu system of philosophy, followed by a critique on various aspects of Hindu philosophy; there are 14 chapters that notice : Karma-Jijnasa; Karma Yog Shastra; the materialistic theory of happiness; the consideration of happiness and unhappiness; Kapila-samkhya-shastra; construction and destruction of the cosmos; Adhyatama (the philosophy of the absolute self); effects of karma and freedom of will; renunciation; path of devotion etc. Volume two is his commentary and analysis of each verse and chapter the Gita. The difference between this commentary of the Gitaand the many other commentaries available, is that this is the analysis of a scholar, as against those that are indulgent musings. This set was translated by Bhalchandra S. Sukhtankar, himself an accomplished scholar. Some illustrations in this set are missing; however, given the importance of this book, it was decided to publish it nonetheless. This set is a reprint of the 1935 edition.
