Stone Yard Devotional The Booker Prize 2024 Shortlisted

“Stone Yard Devotional” by Charlotte Wood is a quiet, meditative novel about a middle‑aged woman who retreats to a rural religious community after a personal crisis. In the silence of the convent garden and surrounding landscape, she confronts grief, guilt, faith, and the unresolved tensions of her past relationships and family life. Blending spiritual reflection with sharp psychological insight, the book explores ageing, friendship, the female body, and the search for meaning in ordinary routine. Its slow, contemplative style and luminous prose make it ideal for readers drawn to character‑driven literary fiction, reflective novels about inner life, and stories that ask how we live ethically in a damaged world.
