The Brothers Karamazov Vintage Classics
The Brothers Karamazov is Fyodor Dostoevsky’s final and most expansive novel: a murder mystery, courtroom drama, family tragedy, and profound inquiry into faith, freedom, responsibility, and evil. First published serially in 1879–80 and as a separate volume in 1880, it is set in provincial nineteenth-century Russia. The story centres on the murder of the corrupt landowner Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov. Suspicion falls on his eldest son, the passionate and impulsive Dmitri, whose rivalry with his father involves money, resentment, and love. The investigation exposes conflicts among the brothers: Ivan, the intellectual sceptic struggling with doubt; Alyosha, a novice monk seeking spiritual truth and compassion; and the secretive half-brother Smerdyakov. Dostoevsky treats the crime as more than a question of legal evidence. Through the brothers’ moral and psychological lives, the novel asks whether a person can reject God yet retain moral responsibility; whether freedom without love becomes destructive; and how guilt may be shared across a family and society. Its courtroom climax turns judgement into a test not only of facts, but of conscience.
