The Gora

“The Gora” by Rabindranath Tagore is a major Indian novel set in 1880s Calcutta, following Gora, a fiery young Hindu nationalist, and his friend Binoy as they collide with the liberal Brahmo Samaj household of Paresh Babu, Sucharita, and Lalita. Through love, ideological clashes, and a shocking revelation about Gora’s birth, the story questions caste, religion, nationalism, and true Indian identity, offering a powerful vision of spiritual and social renewal that still speaks to today’s debates on belonging and nationhood.
