The Hindus An Alternative History

“The Hindus: An Alternative History” is Wendy Doniger’s expansive narrative of Hinduism that mixes myth, literature, and history to rethink how the tradition is told. Instead of a top‑down Brahmin male and Orientalist view, she foregrounds the perspectives of women, lower castes, animals, and regional voices across 3,000 years of stories and texts. Moving between Sanskrit classics and vernacular sources, she explores shifting ideas of dharma, karma, the body, sexuality, and power, showing how many competing Hinduisms have coexisted over time.
