What OET is

OET tests English through healthcare tasks rather than general academic ones: you write a referral letter, listen to a patient consultation, and role-play with a patient in the speaking section. It is accepted by nursing and medical councils in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, and is the usual route for Nepali nurses registering abroad. Reading and Listening are common to all professions; Writing and Speaking are profession-specific.

Test format

Listening (about 45 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (45 minutes, one profession-specific letter) and Speaking (about 20 minutes, two role-plays). Each sub-test is graded A to E, with B (350) the usual registration requirement.

Where to take it

OET is available on computer at authorised venues in Kathmandu, and OET@Home is available for eligible candidates.

OET for healthcare registration

Regulators ask for a specific grade in each sub-test. Map the requirement to your profession's module before you book, and practise the workplace correspondence tasks.

What a good score looks like

Aim for the grade your registering body demands, usually a B or higher in each sub-test, rather than a generic pass.

Most Nepali students lose easy marks through poor time management, not lack of ability. Build a realistic mock under timed conditions every week and review where you slipped.
