Discount & VAT Calculator

Stack a discount and Nepal's 13% VAT the way shop bills actually work, or pull VAT back out of a VAT-inclusive price.

VAT

Original price Rs. 1,000.00
Discount (10%) -Rs. 100.00
After discount Rs. 900.00
VAT added (13%) +Rs. 117.00
Final price Rs. 1,017.00

You pay Rs. -17.00 less than the original price including VAT.

What VAT means in Nepal

Value Added Tax (VAT) in Nepal is a consumption tax of 13% charged on most goods and services. It is governed by the Value Added Tax Act and collected by the Inland Revenue Department. Businesses registered for VAT add it on top of their selling price, and the amount ultimately paid by the consumer is included in the final bill.

How shop bills are actually calculated

A typical Nepali shop bill first applies any discount to the marked price, then adds 13% VAT on the discounted amount. So a Rs. 1,000 item with a 10% discount becomes Rs. 900, and the 13% VAT on that is Rs. 117, giving a final price of Rs. 1,017. This calculator follows that exact order so your total matches the printed bill.

Discount then VAT, or VAT then discount?

In Nepal the standard practice is to take the discount first and then charge VAT on the reduced price, which is what this tool does when you choose "Add 13%". Charging VAT first and discounting afterwards would give a slightly lower total, and that is not how most retailers and restaurants bill. If a seller does it differently, the result simply will not tie to their bill.

Reading a VAT-inclusive (MRP) price

Many packaged goods in Nepal show a Maximum Retail Price (MRP) that already includes VAT. If you only know that inclusive price and want the net amount before tax, choose "Remove 13%" - the tool extracts the VAT so you can see the base price and the tax portion separately. This is useful for accounting, reimbursements and comparing bulk rates.

Common mistakes when totalling a bill

The usual errors are adding VAT on the original price instead of the discounted one, typing the discount as a rupee amount when the tool expects a percent, or forgetting that some items such as basic unprocessed food are VAT-exempt. Always recheck the discount field and remember this tool assumes a standard 13% rate unless you change it.

Who pays VAT and when it is exempt

VAT is paid by the final consumer, while registered businesses act as collectors. Certain essentials in Nepal - such as unbranded rice, fresh vegetables, educational services and some health services - are exempt or zero-rated, so no 13% is added. For those items simply set VAT to "No VAT" to see the plain discounted price.

VAT in Nepal

Nepal’s standard VAT rate is 13%. Registered businesses must show VAT-inclusive prices, and the tool bakes that in so both seller and buyer see the correct total during sales and everyday shopping — computed offline after the page loads.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nepal’s current VAT rate?

The standard VAT rate in Nepal is 13%. It applies to most goods and services sold by VAT-registered businesses. Some essentials are exempt or zero-rated, in which case you can set this calculator to "No VAT".

Should I add VAT before or after the discount?

Nepali retailers normally discount the marked price first and then add VAT on the reduced amount, and this calculator follows that order with the "Add" mode. The final total therefore matches a standard shop or restaurant bill.

How do I work backwards from a VAT-inclusive price?

Switch the VAT mode to "Remove" and enter the inclusive price as the base. The tool separates the net amount and the 13% VAT it contains, which is handy for accounting, expense claims and comparing supplier quotes.

Is the MRP on Nepali products already VAT-inclusive?

In most cases yes - the Maximum Retail Price printed on packaged goods already includes 13% VAT. Use the "Remove" mode to see the base price underneath that MRP.

Can this calculator total a bill with several different items?

This tool works on a single combined price. For a multi-item bill, first add up the discounted price of every item, then enter that total here with the VAT rate to get the overall tax and final amount.
