Divisions follow the traditional Nepali convention used by TU/HSEB results. Letter-grade (NEB) results report GPA instead.

Why convert marks to percentage?

Percentage is the most universal way to summarise exam performance in Nepal, and it is what scholarship forms, college admissions and job applications usually ask for. Adding up marks across several subjects by hand is error-prone, so this tool totals your obtained and maximum marks and returns one clean overall percentage.

The percentage formula

Percentage = (total marks obtained ÷ total marks possible) × 100. The calculator sums the obtained and total columns across all your subjects, then divides. This automatically handles subjects with different maximum marks, which a simple subject-average would get wrong.

Nepali divisions: Distinction to Third

Under the traditional Nepali convention, 80%+ is Distinction, 60-79.99% is First Division, 45-59.99% is Second Division, and 32-44.99% is Third Division. These bands, shown below the calculator, come from the old TU/HSEB system and are still widely referenced for percentage-based results.

Why the pass mark is 32%

A compound percentage of 32% is generally treated as the pass threshold in the traditional Nepali division system. Below that, the result is shown as "Below pass". Note that NEB letter-grade results use a different 35-mark (NG) rule, so the two systems should not be mixed.

Percentage versus GPA (NEB letter grades)

If your marksheet shows GPA and letter grades (A+, B+, etc.) rather than percentages, this calculator is not the right fit - use the GPA calculator instead. The letter-grade system maps marks to grade points, so a percentage you compute yourself will not match the official GPA.

Common mistakes when totalling marks

Students often average the subject percentages instead of weighting by total marks, forget a subject, or leave a "total" field at zero. Enter every subject’s obtained and total marks, and the tool handles the rest - including subjects with different maximums.

What is a percentage calculator, and how does this free Nepal tool work?

A percentage calculator finds what one number is as a percent of another - most often obtained marks against total. Scolar's tool is a free, browser-only tool for Nepal: enter the obtained and total, and see the percentage and division instantly. No sign-up, no watermark, nothing uploaded.

Why it is free, with no sign-up and unlimited use

The calculation runs in your browser, so your marks are never uploaded and no account is needed. That keeps the tool 100% free, adds no watermark, asks for no email, and lets you calculate unlimited subjects.

How to calculate a percentage, step by step

  • Enter the marks you obtained.
  • Enter the total marks.
  • See the percentage and the Nepali division (Distinction, First, and so on).

Percentages and divisions in Nepal

Nepali result cards express performance as a percentage and a division - Distinction, First, Second, Third - for SEE, NEB and university exams. This tool helps a student or parent read any score against the standard Nepali scale, working offline after the page opens.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my overall percentage?

Add up all your obtained marks, add up all the maximum marks, then divide obtained by total and multiply by 100. The calculator does this across any number of subjects, including ones with different maximums.

What are the division cut-offs in Nepal?

Under the traditional system, 80%+ is Distinction, 60-79.99% is First Division, 45-59.99% is Second Division, and 32-44.99% is Third Division.

What is the pass percentage in Nepal?

A compound percentage of 32% is generally the pass mark in the traditional Nepali division system. Below that the result shows as Below pass. NEB letter-grade results use a separate 35-mark (NG) rule.

Can I calculate percentage for subjects with different totals?

Yes. Enter each subject’s own obtained and total marks; the tool weights them correctly by summing all obtained and all total marks before dividing.

How is this different from the GPA calculator?

This tool works with raw marks and percentages. If your marksheet shows NEB letter grades and GPA, use the GPA calculator instead, because grade points do not map directly to a simple percentage.

Why is my division shown as Below pass?

That means your combined percentage is under 32%, the usual pass threshold. Check that every subject’s obtained and total marks are entered correctly - a missing or zero total can drag the result down.
