A. J. Liebling

A.J. Liebling (1904–1963) was one of the greatest American writers, a journalist associated with The New Yorker for over thirty years. His celebrated collections Between Meals and The Sweet Science established him as a master of appetite — for food, for boxing, for city life — written with unmatched zest and verbosity.

Born into a family of restaurateurs, Liebling began as a newspaperman before joining The New Yorker in 1935 as a columnist of Paris and New York life. His essays on boxing remain the genre's gold standard, and his exuberant prose style continues to inspire journalists.
