A.M. Sheridan Smith
A.M. Sheridan Smith
A.M. Sheridan Smith was an English translator of French thought who played a decisive role in making Michel Foucault's philosophy available in English. His translation of Foucault's The Archaeology of Knowledge and The Discourse on Language remains the standard English version of a founding text of modern critical theory.
Sheridan Smith is also the translator of the first English edition of Foucault's The Order of Things. His careful, considered translations opened the French "discursive turn" — archaeology, genealogy, power-knowledge — to the Anglophone academy, and he worked closely with the philosopher and his allies.
