Abraham Verghese
Abraham Verghese is an Ethiopian-born Indian-American physician and writer, celebrated equally as a doctor of internal medicine and a novelist. His internationally acclaimed novel Cutting for Stone — the story of twin brothers in a mission hospital in Ethiopia — was followed by the bestseller The Covenant of Water.
Raised in Ethiopia and India, Verghese trained in the United States and has run medical schools and clinics while teaching at Stanford. His writing draws deeply on the physician's intimacy with bodies and illness, and is praised for its compassion, storytelling sweep and insistence on the human side of medicine.
