Agota Kristof
Agota Kristof
Ágota Kristóf (1935–2011) was a Hungarian-born novelist who wrote in French, and a key figure of twentieth-century European literature. Her acclaimed trilogy — The Notebook, The Proof, The Third Lie — follows twin brothers through war and its aftermath, told in spare, almost mathematical prose.
Born in Hungary and forced into exile after the 1956 revolution, Kristóf settled in Switzerland, where she worked in menial jobs while learning French. Her writing, stripped of ornament and emotion, renders the brutal logic of survival with a chilling clarity that made The Notebook an international landmark.
