Alan H. Sommerstein

Alan H. Sommerstein is a British classicist, Emeritus Professor of Greek at the University of Nottingham, and one of the world's leading scholars of Greek drama. His translation of The Persians and Other Plays makes Aeschylus's earliest surviving tragedies — including the oldest extant play in European literature — accessible in clear English.

Sommerstein has devoted a career to editing and explaining Athenian theatrical texts, including a landmark full edition of the works of Aeschylus. His translations are prized both in classrooms and on stage for combining scholarship with speakable modern verse.
