Alan Paton
Alan Paton
Alan Paton (1903–1988) was a South African author and anti-apartheid activist whose novel Cry, the Beloved Country became one of the century's greatest works of fiction and conscience. The 1948 bestseller, about a rural Zulu pastor searching for his son in Johannesburg, galvanised readers worldwide against racial injustice.
Paton was a schoolmaster, reformer of prison conditions and founder of the Liberal Party of South Africa. The novel's long influence helped shape international opposition to apartheid, and his later books — including the autobiographical Ah, But Your Land Is Beautiful — continued his moral testimony with quiet, biblical cadence.
