Alasdair MacIntyre
Alasdair MacIntyre
Alasdair MacIntyre is a Scottish-born moral philosopher and one of the most important ethical thinkers of the twentieth century. A Short History of Ethics is his celebrated and controversial survey of Western moral philosophy, from the Greeks to modern emotivism, and his magnum opus After Virtue reshaped debate about the foundations of morality.
MacIntyre taught at Oxford and at major American universities, converting to Roman Catholicism in part through his philosophical convictions. He is best known for the thesis that modernity lost the teleological framework that made earlier ethics coherent, and that philosophy must retrieve a tradition of virtue.
