Edward Albee (1928–2016) was an American playwright, one of the most important dramatists of the twentieth century. His shocking 1962 debut Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? — a married couple's acid evening of games and cruelty — redefined American drama and won an international sensation on stage and film.
Adopted as an infant into a wealthy New York family, Albee rebelled against both world and family, building a career from The Zoo Story and The American Dream to the Pulitzer-winning Three Tall Women in 1994. He studied with and rebelled against every received school of American theatre, and remains a towering figure of stage modernism.
