Andrea Dworkin
Andrea Dworkin
Andrea Dworkin (1946–2005) was an American radical feminist writer and activist whose work permanently changed how pornography, sexuality and power are debated. Books including Pornography: Men Possessing Women and Right-Wing Women — along with her landmark essay collection Intercourse — argued that pornography is a tool of women's subordination and that heterosexuality under patriarchy enforces it.
A campaigner who survived abuse and who testified about the harms of pornography worldwide, Dworkin co-drafted with Catharine MacKinnon the pioneering civil-rights-based anti-pornography ordinances of Minneapolis. Her fierce, rigorous, uncompromising prose made her both reviled and revered, and she remains one of the most consequential and polarizing feminist intellectuals of the twentieth century.
