Andrew Hodges
Andrew Hodges
Andrew Hodges is a British mathematician and biographer, most famous for his epoch-making biography of the computing pioneer Alan Turing. His book Turing: The Enigma — the definitive account of Turing's wartime codebreaking, his invention of the concept of the universal machine and his tragic death — was the basis of the Oscar-winning film The Imitation Game.
A mathematical physicist by training who achieved academic eminence at Oxford and (for a time) the high-energy physics of the S-matrix, Hodges did the painstaking archival work on Turing with the full support of Turing's family. His biography combines biography, mathematics and gay history with unusual moral seriousness, and it remains the touchstone for all later Turing studies.
