Andrew Schelling
Andrew Schelling
Andrew Schelling is an American poet, translator and professor of writing and literature at the Naropa University in Boulder, where he directs the Jack Kerouac School. His translation of Erotic Love Poems from India renders verses from the classical Sanskrit and Tamil erotic traditions — the Gita Govinda and the Bhartrihari verses — into clear English.
Schelling has translated classical Indian poetry (The Cane Groves of Narmada River, his collaboration with the critic), the Tantric poets of Bengal, and the haikuising of the Himalaya, and writes essays on the meeting of poetry and Buddhism. His modern, subversive and earthy renderings reintroduced the world's oldest love poetry to currents of American poetry.
