Angela Carter
Angela Carter
Angela Carter (1940–1992) was an English novelist, short-story writer and journalist, one of the most original and influential writers of her generation. Her stories — the glittering, carnivalesque Black Venus and Fireworks and the Gothic-rewritten fairy tales of The Bloody Chamber — re-imagined myth, fairy tale and women's position in the Western imagination.
Carter lived in Japan, worked on The Bloody Chamber with spinning irony, and was a founding figure of the British magic-realist revival. She combined feminism, surrealism and a bawdy joy in the baroque, and her influence on the novelists of the 1980s and 90s — from Salman Rushdie to Sarah Waters — is incalculable.
