Madan Mani Dixit
Madan Mani Dixit
Madan Mani Dixit (1923–2019) was a giant of modern Nepali literature and journalism — a novelist, critic and editor who helped build a psychological, realist tradition in Nepali fiction. His novel Madhabi, a subtle study of a middle-class Kathmandu household and a woman's inner world, is counted among the milestones of modern Nepali prose.
For decades Dixit served as a pillar of Nepali letters, editing major literary journals, championing the short story and mentoring generations of younger writers. He worked alongside the leading writers of his era while remaining strikingly open to modern ideas, carrying European influences and a seriousness about craft into Nepali writing. When he died at ninety-six, Nepal mourned not only an author but the living memory of an entire literary generation that he had helped keep alive.
