How CGPA is calculated

CGPA = Σ(semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ(total credits). A 4-credit semester counts twice as much as a 2-credit one, which is why a simple average of your GPAs is usually wrong.

What is CGPA and how is it calculated?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is your overall grade point average across every semester of a programme. It is not a simple average of your semester GPAs. Instead, each semester GPA is weighted by that semester’s credit hours, then all the weighted points are added up and divided by the total credits. This gives a fair picture of your performance across the whole degree.

Difference between GPA and CGPA

GPA is for a single semester or term, while CGPA is the running total across all semesters completed so far. A strong GPA in one semester lifts your CGPA, but its effect depends on how many credits that semester carried. Your final CGPA is what appears on your transcript and is usually what employers and universities ask for.

Why credit hours matter

A 4-credit semester contributes twice as much to your CGPA as a 2-credit one, because it represents roughly twice the study load. That is why a plain average of your GPAs is usually wrong - the calculator multiplies each GPA by its credits so heavier semesters count for more, exactly as universities do it.

CGPA divisions in Nepal

On the 4.0 scale commonly used by Nepali universities, a CGPA of 3.6 and above is typically a Distinction, 3.0-3.59 is First Division, 2.4-2.99 is Second Division, and below that needs improvement. Exact cut-offs vary by institution, so treat these as a general guide rather than a fixed rule.

Can I include semesters with different credit loads?

Yes. The whole point of the weighted formula is to handle semesters of different sizes. Just enter each semester’s GPA and its credit hours, and the calculator works out the correct combined CGPA no matter how the credits are distributed.

Common mistakes when calculating CGPA

The most common error is averaging the semester GPAs directly instead of weighting by credits. Others include entering credits as zero, mixing up GPA (0-4) with percentage, or forgetting a repeated/extra semester. Enter every completed semester with its real credit hours and the tool avoids all of these.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA is your grade point average for a single semester, while CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters completed, weighted by credit hours.

How is CGPA calculated in Nepal?

CGPA = Σ(semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ(total credits). Each semester is weighted by its credit hours rather than being a plain average of GPAs.

Why are credit hours important in CGPA?

A semester with more credits represents a heavier study load, so it should count for more. Weighting by credits ensures your CGPA reflects the actual contribution of each term.

What CGPA is a Distinction or First Division?

On the 4.0 scale, roughly 3.6+ is Distinction, 3.0-3.59 is First Division, and 2.4-2.99 is Second Division. Exact cut-offs vary by university, so confirm with your institution.

Can I calculate CGPA if semesters had different credits?

Yes. Enter each semester’s GPA and credit hours and the calculator handles different credit loads automatically using the weighted formula.

Does CGPA include failed or repeated semesters?

In most Nepali universities the repeated or improved semester result is what counts toward the cumulative CGPA. Check your university’s specific repeat policy, as rules differ.
