Best Bookshop in Nepal: Top Bookstores in Kathmandu (2026 Guide)
The best bookshops in Nepal, compared: Scolar for nationwide delivery and exam prep, Books Mandala for range, Pilgrims and Biblio in Thamel, Mandala Book Point for academics, Pairavi for Loksewa, Ekta, Vajra and Ratna Pustak Bhandar.
Kathmandu has a bookshop culture out of proportion to its size. A city of a few million supports specialist Himalayan-studies stores, four-storey academic retailers, a 1946-vintage publishing house that still runs a counter, a dedicated Loksewa and law publisher, and a set of online bookstores that now deliver to every district in the country. This guide ranks the best of them, explains what each one is genuinely good for, and helps you choose based on what you are actually trying to buy.
A note on transparency before we start: Scolar is our own bookshop, and we have placed it first. The rest of this list is written to be useful regardless, because a guide that pretends the competition does not exist is no use to anyone. Where another shop beats us on something, we say so.

1. Scolar - our pick for students and readers outside Kathmandu
Best for: Nepali literature and academic titles delivered anywhere in Nepal, with cash on delivery.
Scolar is an online bookstore, and that is the point of it. Kathmandu's physical bookshops are excellent, and they solve a problem only for people who can reach Kathmandu. If you are in Pokhara, Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, Itahari or a district headquarters with no serious bookshop, the constraint on your reading has never been interest. It has been access.
We will be straight about size, because two shops further down this list carry more titles than we do. Our catalogue is over 12,000 books in stock, across 6,500 authors and 865 publishers in roughly 290 categories. Books Mandala advertises a larger range, and Biblio Nepal carries a bigger English-language selection than we do. What we are built around is not raw count.
What Scolar is actually organised for:
- Nepali literature in depth. The Madan Puraskar winners, the standard classroom editions, and contemporary Nepali fiction, rather than the two or three titles a general shop keeps facing out.
- Students specifically. School and university material, Loksewa and test preparation, and stationery in the same order, so equipping a school year is one delivery rather than three errands.
- Browsing by author and publisher. You can move from a single Parijat title to her whole list, or work through a publisher's catalogue, which is how people who read seriously actually shop.
- Paying without a bank card. Cash on delivery, eSewa, Khalti or card. A student without a card can still order a book.
- Delivery across Nepal, not the valley alone.
The honest limitation: you cannot pick a book up and read the first page before deciding. If that ritual is why you buy books, several shops below will serve you better, and we would rather you enjoy the shopping than pretend otherwise.

2. Pilgrims Book House - Thamel
Best for: Himalayan writing, Buddhism and Hinduism, travel literature.
Website: pilgrimsonlineshop.com Address: Chaksibari Marg-16, Thamel, Kathmandu Phone: +977 1 5326923, mobile and WhatsApp +977 9818973392 Email: info@pilgrimsonlineshop.com
Pilgrims has been a Thamel institution for over thirty years and is the first name most people give when asked about bookshops in Kathmandu. It is the closest thing the city has to a destination bookshop, the kind travellers plan an afternoon around. Alongside books it carries stationery, films and gifts, and it now operates from a location near the Kathmandu Guest House.
Its strength is subject depth in exactly the areas visitors and researchers want: the Himalaya, Nepali and Tibetan religion, mountaineering accounts, and travel writing about the region. If you want a serious English-language book about Nepal itself, start here.
3. Books Mandala - Baluwatar and Pokhara
Best for: the widest range in the country, and shipping abroad.
Website: booksmandala.com Kathmandu: Baluwatar, Gairidhara Road, Kathmandu. Phone +977-1-4429486. Open daily 10:00 to 20:00 Pokhara: Lakeside, Pokhara. Phone +977-61-463688. Open daily 9:00 to 22:00 Email: not published on their contact page, use the site contact form
Books Mandala is the largest bookstore operation in Nepal by catalogue, advertising more than 40,000 titles available for delivery. It began online and now runs physical stores in Kathmandu, on Gairidhara Road in Baluwatar, and in Pokhara at Lakeside, with nationwide delivery and international shipping.
The practical advantages are range and tooling. You can search by title, author or keyword, request books that are not listed, set restock alerts on out-of-stock titles, and place pre-orders. For an obscure international title, or for sending books out of Nepal, this is the most reliable option on this list.
If you want the biggest possible selection and do not need cash on delivery, Books Mandala is the straightforward answer.
4. Mandala Book Point - Kantipath
Best for: academic research on Nepal and the Himalayan region.
Website: mandalabookpoint.com Address: Kantipath, P.O. Box 528, Kathmandu Phone: +977 1-4255444 Email: not publicly listed
Mandala Book Point is the shop academics name. Its floor-to-ceiling specialist stacks are built for researchers working on the Himalaya, and along with Pilgrims it holds one of the widest English-language selections in the city.
This is not a shop for browsing bestsellers. It is where you go when you need a specific monograph, a regional studies title, or something a general retailer would never carry. Ask at the counter rather than only browsing, because the useful stock is not always the visible stock.
Note that Mandala Book Point and Books Mandala are different businesses with confusingly similar names. The Kantipath academic shop is the one meant here.
5. Biblio Nepal - Chaksibari Marg, Thamel
Best for: curated English fiction and non-fiction, and titles nobody else has.
Website: biblionepal.com Address: Chaksibari Marg, Thamel, Kathmandu 44600 Phone: +977 014700975, mobile +977 9846525426 Email: contact@biblionepal.com Hours: open daily, 9:00 to 21:00
Biblio Nepal, also known as Nepal Book Depot, sits in the heart of Thamel beside the Kathmandu Guest House and stocks over 15,000 books. Its reputation is built on curation rather than volume: underrated and hard-to-find titles that do not appear on other shelves in the country, across fiction, non-fiction and travel writing in English.
It also runs online ordering with in-store pickup in Thamel, and ships internationally by DHL. Regular customers single out the staff, and the owner in particular, as unusually helpful in finding things.
If you are the kind of reader who is bored by the same twenty bestsellers, this is your shop.
6. Ekta Books - Thapathali
Best for: university textbooks and children's books, in a space you can actually sit down in.
Website: ektabooks.com Address: Thapathali, Kathmandu Phone: +977-1-5345787, 5330729, 5360482, 5362091 Email: ektabookssr@gmail.com
Ekta runs across four floors, which makes it unusually spacious by Kathmandu standards. The range covers university textbooks across subjects, classic and contemporary fiction, academic and reference works, magazines, stationery, and a strong children's section.
The layout is the underrated part. Plenty of natural light, an open plan, and places to sit and read a few pages before committing. For parents buying children's books, or students working through a reading list, it is the most comfortable browse in the city.
7. Pairavi Prakashan - Putalisadak
Best for: Loksewa, PSC, banking and law books.
Website: pairavi.com.np Address: Ram Shah Path, Putalisadak, Kathmandu Phone: +977 9746503655 Email: pairaviprakashan@gmail.com Hours: Sunday to Friday, 9:00 to 19:00
Founded in 1986, Pairavi Prakashan has spent nearly four decades as a publisher, distributor and retailer, and it is the name most closely associated with competitive-exam preparation in Nepal. Its shop in Putalisadak carries Loksewa and Public Service Commission material, teacher service commission and banking preparation, an extensive law list, and general academic titles, literature and novels alongside them.
Because Pairavi publishes much of what it sells, the exam material tends to be current in a way that resold stock often is not. It also handles online orders and delivers across Nepal and abroad.
If you are preparing for Loksewa or studying law, this is the specialist stop.
8. Vajra Books - Thamel
Best for: Himalayan studies, and getting a real recommendation.
Website: vajrabookshop.com Address: Jyatha, Thamel, P.O. Box 21779, Kathmandu Phone: +977-1-5320562, mobile +977-9851071473, WhatsApp +977-9813866079 Email: vajrabooks@hotmail.com, vajrabooksktm@gmail.com
Vajra is smaller than Pilgrims and more focused. It is owned by Bidur Dangol, who knows the stock and will advise you on what suits your actual question rather than what is nearest the till. Vajra is also a publisher, which shows in the specialist Himalayan-studies range.
If you have a vague research interest and want to leave with the right book rather than four adjacent ones, this is where to have the conversation.
9. Ratna Pustak Bhandar - the oldest bookshop in Nepal
Best for: Nepali-language classics and publishing history.
Website: shopratnaonline.com Address: Bhotahity, P.O. Box 98, Kathmandu Phone: +977 1-5340850 Email: not publicly listed
The business goes back to 1939, when Ram Das Shrestha began selling books, mostly religious, from a cart in Bhotahity near Ratna Park. It traded as Ram Das and Sons until 1946, when it was renamed Ratna Pustak Bhandar after his eldest son, Ratna Prasad Shrestha. That makes it the oldest bookstore in the country. It has operated as a publisher, distributor and retailer throughout, and a large share of the standard Nepali editions people have studied from for decades carry its imprint.
Go for the Nepali-language list and for the sense of continuity. A shop selling books since two years before the end of the Rana period is itself part of the literary history it stocks.
Physical bookshop or online bookstore?
The two solve different problems, and most serious readers in Nepal end up using both.
Buy in a physical shop when you want to handle the book first, you are browsing without a specific title in mind, you need it today, or you want a recommendation from someone who has read it.
Buy from an online bookstore when you know what you want, you live outside Kathmandu, you are ordering several titles at once, you need something a general shop will not stock, or you simply do not have a free afternoon in Thamel.
The access gap is the honest argument for online. Kathmandu's bookshop culture is excellent and it is also almost entirely concentrated in Kathmandu. A reader in Surkhet is not choosing between nine good shops.
A neighbourhood guide to book shopping in Kathmandu
- Thamel: Pilgrims, Biblio Nepal and Vajra, all within walking distance. The natural half-day for Himalayan, travel and curated English titles.
- Kantipath: Mandala Book Point, for academic work.
- Putalisadak: Pairavi Prakashan, for Loksewa and law.
- Thapathali: Ekta, for textbooks and children's books.
- Baluwatar: Books Mandala on Gairidhara Road, for the widest general range.
- Ratna Park and the centre: the older bookselling streets around New Road and Bhotahity.
Practical tips for buying books in Nepal
- Check the edition before you pay. Pirated and low-quality reprints circulate, particularly for popular international titles. Look at print quality, binding, and whether the ISBN and publisher details are present and legible.
- Nepali-language editions vary in pagination. If you are buying for a course, match the edition to the syllabus, because page references will not carry across printings.
- Ask at the counter. In the specialist shops, a meaningful share of stock is not on display. Staff at Mandala Book Point, Vajra and Biblio in particular can find things you will not see.
- Buy Nepali classics in Nepali if you can read it. Translations are good, but Muna Madan in Jhyaure metre does something in Nepali that English cannot reproduce.
- Compare before ordering a set. For multi-title orders, an online bookstore usually wins on both total price and effort, since you are not paying for transport to and from Thamel twice.
- For exam books, buy from the publisher where you can. Loksewa syllabi change, and publisher-direct stock is less likely to be an outdated printing.

Before you travel across town
Addresses, phone numbers and opening hours in this guide were checked at the time of writing, and small shops in Kathmandu do move, change numbers and adjust hours. Ekta's own site recommends calling ahead to confirm a title is in stock before you visit, which is good advice for any of the shops here. If you find a detail below has changed, tell us and we will correct it.
The short version
If you are in Kathmandu with a free afternoon and general curiosity, go to Thamel and work through Pilgrims, Biblio and Vajra. If you are researching the Himalaya, go to Mandala Book Point. If you are buying textbooks or children's books, go to Ekta. If you are sitting Loksewa, go to Pairavi. If you want the biggest possible catalogue or need a book shipped abroad, use Books Mandala.
