Bridge Courses and Entrance Classes Are Banned in Nepal: What SEE Graduates Should Do Now
The Ministry of Education has ordered institutions to stop running bridge courses and entrance preparation classes. Here is what the notice says, why its scope was disputed, and how to prepare for Grade 11 without paying for coaching.
Nepal's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has ordered educational institutions to stop running bridge courses and entrance preparation classes, a decision that changes how hundreds of thousands of SEE graduates spend the months between Class 10 and Class 11.
The ministry issued the notice at the end of Chaitra 2082 and set enforcement from Baisakh 1, 2083, which falls on 14 April 2026. Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel said the aim is to protect students' overall learning and the dignity of school education, and to stop the steady commercialisation of the gap between school levels.
WHAT EXACTLY HAS BEEN BANNED
The order targets two products that coaching institutes sell every year.
- Bridge courses, the paid classes marketed to SEE graduates in the gap before Grade 11 begins, usually promising a head start in science or management.
- Entrance preparation classes, the coaching packages sold ahead of admission tests for higher education programmes.
District Administration Offices were asked to monitor institutions in their area and take action against those that keep running the classes after the deadline.
THE PART THAT CAUSED CONFUSION
The rollout was messy, and it is worth knowing why, because it affects what you will hear from institutes.
The ministry's written notice read as a blanket ban across all levels. The minister's own public clarification said the restriction applied only to courses up to Grade 12. The two statements did not match, the notice was later pulled from the ministry website, and news outlets reported the contradiction within days.
What has not changed is the direction of policy. The ministry has been consistent on one point. Grade 11 admission is to be based on school records and SEE results, not on a paid preparation course bought in between.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR A STUDENT WHO JUST FINISHED SEE
Old habit: enrol in a two month bridge course in Baisakh. Do this instead: use the gap to finish college applications and confirm your stream.
Old habit: pay for entrance coaching before Grade 11. Do this instead: prepare with free NEB model questions and past papers.
Old habit: choose a college because it gives a bridge class. Do this instead: compare colleges on results, teachers, lab facilities and total fees.
Old habit: wait for a coaching centre to explain the syllabus. Do this instead: read the Grade 11 syllabus for your stream before day one.
The practical effect is simple. Money and time that used to go into a bridge course can go into the admission itself, and into self study that costs nothing.
HOW TO PREPARE WITHOUT A COACHING CLASS
- Confirm your stream early. Science, management, humanities and education have different subject combinations and different Grade 12 workloads. Decide before you shortlist colleges, not after.
- Read the actual syllabus. The NEB curriculum for Grade 11 is public. Skim the first two units of your core subjects and you will start the year ahead of most of your classmates.
- Work through past papers. Model questions and previous years' sets teach the exam format, which is a large part of the marks.
- Fix the weak subject from SEE. If mathematics or science pulled your GPA down, that gap does not disappear at the higher level. Give it thirty focused minutes a day rather than a month of panic later.
- Use free structured material. Self paced courses, library books and school teachers cover the same ground a bridge course charges for.
WHAT COLLEGES ARE STILL ALLOWED TO DO
A college can orient new students, publish its subject list, run counselling sessions and hold its own internal placement test for section allocation. What it cannot do is sell a paid preparation programme in the gap between levels. If an institution is charging you for a bridge class this season, that is exactly what the ministry has asked District Administration Offices to look at.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the ban in force right now? The enforcement date given by the ministry was Baisakh 1, 2083. The written notice was later withdrawn from the ministry website during the dispute over its scope, so ask your college for the current instruction it has received from its local education office before paying for anything.
Does this affect language classes and IELTS or PTE preparation? Those are not Grade 11 bridge courses. The dispute over scope centred on entrance preparation for school and higher education admission, so treat any claim about test preparation classes with caution and check the notice your institution is working from.
Will Grade 11 admission become harder without coaching? Admission is based on your SEE result and school record. Colleges may still run internal tests for section placement, and those are set on the school syllabus you already studied.
What should parents do with the money saved? Books, a reliable calculator and stationery for two full years of higher secondary cost a fraction of a bridge course, and they last longer.
WHERE TO GO NEXT
Compare colleges before you commit. Browse colleges and universities by district, level and stream in the Scolar institutions directory at scolarnepal.com/institutions, read the test preparation guides at scolarnepal.com/test-preparation if you are planning further study, and pick up your Grade 11 books and stationery once your stream is confirmed.
