What SAT is

The SAT is now fully digital and adaptive, sat on a laptop or tablet through the Bluebook app in about two and a quarter hours. It reports Reading & Writing and Math out of 800 each. Many US universities are test-optional, but for Nepali applicants chasing need-based aid or merit scholarships a strong SAT still does real work — it is one of the few comparable signals an admissions committee has.

Test format

Two sections — Reading & Writing, and Math — each split into two adaptive modules. Your performance in the first module determines the difficulty of the second. A calculator is allowed throughout the Math section.

Where to take it

Digital SAT sittings run at authorised schools and test centres in Kathmandu several times a year. Registration is through the College Board account and fills up early.

How SAT is used in admissions

Schools use the score alongside your academics, essays and recommendations. A strong result offsets a weaker GPA, but it rarely carries an application on its own.

Sending scores to universities

You choose recipients and reports are sent electronically, often free for a limited number of schools. Send to every likely school early so deadlines are never the bottleneck.

What a good score looks like

Research the median score at your target schools. Preparing against that specific target beats chasing a generic top score.

Frequently asked

1 Do I still need the SAT if universities are test-optional?

Not for admission at many, but a good score materially helps scholarship and financial-aid decisions for international applicants.

2 How many times can I sit the SAT?

As often as it is offered; most students sit it twice and send the better result.

3 How long are SAT scores valid?

Scores are valid for five years from the test date, so an early attempt still counts when you apply later.

4 How many times can I take it?

Multiple attempts are allowed and many students improve on a second sit. Space them so you can act on practice-test feedback.

5 Do universities see all my scores?

Policy varies. Some superscore (best section across sittings) while others see every attempt. Check each school's policy before booking.

6 When should I take it?

Aim for 6 to 12 months before your intake so results land before deadlines and you have time for a retake if needed.

7 What is a good score?

Aim for the median score at your target schools rather than a generic top score; prepare against that specific target.
