Romanized Nepali typing, explained
Romanized (or "Roman") Nepali typing lets you write Nepali using an English keyboard. You type the sound of each word in Latin letters - “namaste”, “kasto chha”, “Dhanyavaad” - and the tool turns it into Devanagari as you type. It is the easiest way for anyone who does not have a Nepali keyboard layout installed to write in नेपाली on a phone, laptop or in a browser.
How the transliteration works
The converter reads your Roman input syllable by syllable and maps it to the nearest Devanagari sound. Vowels like a/aa become अ/आ, consonants join automatically with the halant (्) unless a vowel follows, and a capital letter mid-word triggers retroflex sounds (T, Th, D, Dh, N → ट ठ ड ढ ण). A trailing “M” after a vowel becomes the nasal ं (anusvara). Open the typing guide below the editor to see every key mapping.
Unicode vs Preeti: which should you use?
Always use Unicode Devanagari for anything modern. Unicode stores the real Nepali character, so it shows correctly everywhere with no font install, is searchable, and is what social media and government e-services expect. Preeti is a legacy font that only looks like Nepali when that specific font is present - fine only for old systems. This tool outputs Unicode, which you can later send through the Preeti converter if a legacy workflow demands it.
Where to use your Nepali text
Because the output is standard Unicode Devanagari, you can paste it straight into Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, email, MS Word, Excel and any Nepali website. No special font or setup is needed on the receiving end - it simply appears as proper Nepali script.
Tips for accurate transliteration
Type the sound, not the English spelling: “bh” and “ph” are aspirated (भ, फ), while “b” and “p” are plain (ब, प). Use a capital letter for retroflex sounds (T → ट), put “`” or “\” before a consonant to force a halant, and end a word naturally so its final consonant stays bare (ram → राम). Small adjustments like these fix most surprises.
Private and works offline
The transliteration happens entirely in your browser as you type - your words are never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone else, and the page keeps working without an internet connection once loaded. That makes it safe for personal messages, assignments and any text you would rather not send to a server.
How it works
Type Roman English in the left box - "namaste", "tapai lai kasto chha" - and watch Devanagari appear on the right.

Frequently asked questions
How do I type in Nepali using an English keyboard?
Type the pronunciation in Roman letters, for example "namaste" becomes नमस्ते and "kasto chha" becomes कस्तो छ. The conversion happens instantly as you type, then copy the Nepali text wherever you need it.
Is this Nepali typing tool free?
Yes, it is completely free with no signup, no limits and no watermarks. Everything runs inside your browser.
Can I use the typed Nepali text on Facebook or MS Word?
Yes. The output is standard Unicode Devanagari text, so it works in Facebook, Instagram, MS Word, Excel, email and any app that supports Nepali.
What is the difference between Unicode and Preeti?
Unicode stores the real Nepali character and works everywhere with no font install, while Preeti is a legacy font that only looks like Nepali when that font is present. This tool gives you Unicode; use the Preeti converter if an old system needs it.
How do I get retroflex sounds like ट, ठ, ड?
Use a capital letter in the middle of a word: T, Th, D, Dh, N produce ट, ठ, ड, ढ, ण. Lower-case t/th/d/dh give the dental त, थ, द, ध instead.
