What is Dashain?

Dashain (दशैं), also called Vijaya Dashami, is the longest and most important festival in Nepal. It is a 15-day celebration that honours the victory of good over evil - Lord Ram’s triumph over the demon king Ravana - and the goddess Durga’s defeat of Mahishasura.

How is it celebrated?

Families gather for tika (rice, yoghurt and vermilion) and jamara (golden sacred grass) from elders, receiving blessings for the year ahead. People fly kites, buy new clothes, feast, gamble playfully, and ride the traditional ping (swing).

Homecoming

Dashain is Nepal’s largest annual homecoming. Workers and students across the country - and abroad - travel home to be with family, making it the busiest travel season of the year.

The key days

It opens with Ghatasthapana (sowing jamara) and peaks on Vijaya Dashami, the 10th day. The festival closes with Kojagrat Purnima on the full moon.
