Number to Nepali Words
Type an amount and get it written out in Nepali or English words the way banks expect on cheques - lakh and crore style, with “मात्र” included.
नेपालीमा
रु 12,34,567। बाह्र लाख चौंतिस हजार पाँच सय सत्सठ्ठी रुपैयाँ मात्र।
In English
Rs. 12,34,567/- twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven rupees only.
How Nepali number words work
Writing a number in Nepali words means spelling out the amount in Devanagari using the standard Nepali number names: एक (1), दुई (2), तीन (3), दश (10), सय (100), हजार (1,000), लाख (100,000) and करोड (10,000,000). This tool builds that spelling automatically from the digits you type, so you get “बाह्र लाख चौतीस हजार पाँच सय सात” for 12,34,507 without working it out by hand.
Crore, lakh and the Nepali numbering system
Nepal groups large numbers by lakhs and crores, not by thousands and millions the way English does. After हजार (1,000) comes लाख (1,00,000) and then करोड (1,00,00,000). So 1,23,45,678 is read as “एक करोड तेइस लाख पैंतालीस हजार छ सय अठहत्तर” - a pattern that takes some getting used to if you learned Western grouping first.
When to write amounts in words
Banks and offices in Nepal require the amount in words on cheques, demand drafts, vouchers and many formal letters. Writing the words prevents the figure from being altered after it is printed, and it is the standard way a cheque “रुपैयाँ मात्र” line is filled in. Typing the digits and converting is far safer than handwriting the words yourself.
Nepali vs English wording on documents
This tool gives you both: a Devanagari line (रु … रुपैयाँ मात्र) and an English line (Rs. … only). Use the Nepali version where the form is in Nepali and the English version where the document is bilingual or in English - both carry the same amount, and the “only / मात्र” ending is what makes the figure legally final.
Why “मात्र” (only) matters on a cheque
The word मात्र (or “only”) closes the amount so nothing can be added after it - “बाह्र लाख रुपैयाँ मात्र” cannot be extended to “बाह्र लाख … करोड”. Banks expect it, and leaving it off is a common reason a cheque is returned. Tick the cheque-wording option to include it automatically.
Limits and large amounts
The converter handles amounts up to the hundreds of crores, which covers every realistic cheque or voucher in Nepal. If you enter a number beyond that range the tool warns you instead of producing a garbled result, since such figures are outside normal banking use.
How it works
Type the amount in digits (commas are fine) - a sample is prefilled so you see output at once.
Pick whether to include the “rupees … only / रुपैयाँ मात्र” cheque wording.
Copy the Nepali, the English, or both lines and paste them onto your cheque or voucher.
Why use this tool?
-
Uses the lakh-crore grouping Nepal banks expect, not the Western thousand-million style.
-
The “मात्र / only” ending locks the figure so it cannot be altered after writing.
-
Handy for cheques, demand drafts, receipts, rent agreements and formal letters.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a cheque amount in Nepali words?
Type the figure in the box above and copy the Devanagari line that ends with “रुपैयाँ मात्र”. Paste it on the cheque’s amount-in-words line. Keep the digit box and the words line the same value.
What is the difference between lakh and crore?
A lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand) and a crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million). Nepal counts in lakhs and crores, so 12,34,507 reads as “बाह्र लाख चौतीस हजार पाँच सय सात”.
Why does the output add “मात्र” (only)?
मात्र means “only” and closes the amount so nobody can add digits after it - the same role “only” plays in English. Banks expect it on cheques, so leave the cheque-wording option ticked.
Can I get the English words as well?
Yes. With the option on, you get both a Nepali line and an English line (“Rs. … /- … rupees only”), which is useful for bilingual or English-language documents.
What is the largest amount it can convert?
It handles amounts up to the hundreds of crores - more than any normal Nepali cheque or voucher needs. Beyond that it shows a warning instead of a wrong result.
