Crop versus resize: what is the difference?

Crop trims the visible area of every page by the margins you set, hiding the edges while keeping the original page size. Resize is different: it places each page, scaled to fit, onto a brand-new A4 or Letter sheet. Use crop to cut away ragged borders and resize to make mixed-size pages uniform.

Trimming margins in millimetres

In crop mode you enter a margin for the top, right, bottom and left in millimetres. The tool converts those values to PDF points (1 mm ≈ 2.83 points) and sets each page’s crop box accordingly. A scanned page with a thick black border, for example, can be tightened by adding a few millimetres on each side.

Resizing to A4 or Letter

In resize mode every page is drawn onto a fresh sheet you choose - A4 (210 × 297 mm) or US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). This is handy when a document mixes sizes, or when a portal expects a specific page format. The whole file is normalised to one consistent size.

Content scaling and aspect ratio

Resizing never stretches your content. Each page is scaled by the same factor in both directions to fit the target sheet, then centred, so text and images keep their exact proportions. There is no distortion and nothing is cropped unless it falls outside the sheet.

Typical uses for students

Crop away the dark edges of scanned notes or question papers, or resize a mix of A4 and Letter pages into a single tidy PDF before printing or submitting. Because everything runs in your browser, your file is never uploaded. Made for students in Nepal - 100% free, no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

Is this crop and resize tool free?

Yes. Cropping and resizing PDF pages on Scolar is completely free, with no watermarks and no sign-up. Made for students in Nepal - 100% free, no watermark.

What is the difference between crop and resize?

Crop trims the visible area of each page by the margins you set, keeping the original file size. Resize places each page, scaled to fit, onto a fresh A4 or Letter canvas. Made for students in Nepal - 100% free, no watermark.

Will resizing distort my content?

No. Pages are scaled proportionally and centred on the target sheet, so text and images keep their shape. Made for students in Nepal - 100% free, no watermark.

Can I undo a crop?

Cropping sets the crop box of your downloaded copy only; your original file is untouched, so you can always start again. Made for students in Nepal - 100% free, no watermark.

Are margins measured in points or centimetres?

You enter margins in millimetres, which the tool converts to PDF points internally (1 mm ≈ 2.83 points). Millimetres are easier to estimate from a ruler than points or centimetres, so trimming a known border is straightforward. Made for students in Nepal - 100% free, no watermark.

Does cropping reduce the file size?

Not usually. Cropping only hides the trimmed area by adjusting the crop box - the original page data often remains in the file - so the size stays about the same. If you need a smaller file, use the Compress PDF tool afterwards. Made for students in Nepal - 100% free, no watermark.
