What PTE is
PTE Academic is delivered entirely on a computer and marked entirely by algorithm, which removes the human examiner from the speaking section and gets most results back within 48 hours. It is accepted by every Australian and New Zealand university, by the Australian and New Zealand governments for visa purposes, and by a large share of UK and Canadian institutions. Students who are comfortable with a headset and typing frequently score better here than on IELTS; students with strong handwriting and interview skills often find the reverse.
Test format
One sitting of roughly two hours covering three parts: Speaking & Writing (personal introduction, read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, essay), Reading (multiple choice, re-order paragraphs, fill in the blanks) and Listening (summarise spoken text, dictation). Scoring is integrated — one task can feed several skill scores.
Where to take it
PTE runs at Pearson-authorised test centres in Kathmandu, with additional centres in Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal and Biratnagar. Slots are usually available within a week.
Who asks for PTE
| Destination | Typical requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 🇦🇺 Australia | 50–58 overall, no communicative skill below 50 | Accepted by every Australian university and by the Department of Home Affairs. |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | 60 overall | Accepted by most Canadian institutions and by IRCC for study permits. |
| 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | 59–65 overall | PTE Academic UKVI is accepted for visa purposes. |
| 🇳🇿 New Zealand | 50 overall | Accepted for both admission and visa. |
Academic vs General Training
Most university offers ask for the Academic module. General Training is usually for migration or secondary-school entry. Pick the module your institution or visa office names, because the Reading and Writing tasks differ.
Computer-delivered vs paper-based
Both produce the same score. Computer delivery returns results faster and lets you type essays; paper suits those who prefer handwriting. Book the format your nearest centre offers.
What a good score looks like
Aim for the band your offer specifies, not a generic "high" score. Australian and UK universities commonly ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall with no band below 6.0. Check each institution's exact requirement before you book.

Frequently asked
1 Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Neither is easier — they test differently. PTE rewards fluent, machine-clear speech and fast typing; IELTS rewards handwriting and a live conversation.
2 How fast do PTE results come?
Typically within 48 hours, sometimes the same day.
3 How long are PTE scores valid?
Most English test scores are valid for two years from the test date. Plan your application so the score is still valid when you submit it.
4 Can I retake the test if I miss my score?
Yes. You can book another attempt; there is usually no limit, but check the waiting period and your deadline, then target the exact band your offer specifies.
5 Computer-delivered or paper-based — which should I choose?
Both give the same score. Computer delivery returns results faster and lets you type essays; paper suits those who prefer handwriting. Pick what your nearest centre offers.
6 How do I send my score to universities?
You nominate institutions when booking or afterwards, and reports are sent electronically to the schools you choose.
7 What score do I need for a student visa?
It depends on the country and course. Australia and the UK commonly ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall with no band below 6.0 — confirm the exact requirement with your institution and visa office.
