The honest picture
Australia takes more Nepali students than every other destination combined, and the reasons are practical rather than romantic: universities that accept a wide band of academic profiles, a student visa that permits work, a large Nepali community in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, and a post-study work visa that turns a two-year masters into four or five years in the country.
That popularity has a cost. Australian student visa refusals for Nepali applicants rose sharply after the post-pandemic surge, and the Genuine Student (GS) requirement introduced in 2024 replaced the older Genuine Temporary Entrant test with a sharper focus on whether your course actually follows from your academic history. A student with a management background applying to an unrelated vocational cookery course is now a refusal risk in a way they were not five years ago.
The practical implication for planning: choose a course that a case officer can trace back to your previous study or work, and build your financial evidence months before you lodge rather than weeks.
Why Australia
- Universities ranked in the global top 100 in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth
- Post-study work rights of two to four years depending on the qualification and location
- Unlimited work rights during scheduled course breaks, and 48 hours a fortnight in session
- An established Nepali community, which makes the first six months materially easier
- February and July intakes, with some providers adding a November intake
Tests Australia asks for
| Test | Typical requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Usually required | 6.0–6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 | The university requirement and the student-visa requirement are set separately; the visa bar is usually lower. |
| PTE Usually required | 50–58 overall, no communicative skill below 50 | Accepted by every Australian university and by the Department of Home Affairs. |
| TOEFL | 60–79 overall | Accepted, but less common in Nepali applications than IELTS or PTE. |
The visa route
The Subclass 500 student visa is lodged online through ImmiAccount after you have an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) from your provider. The file needs your eCoE, Overseas Student Health Cover, English evidence, academic transcripts, financial capacity evidence, a Genuine Student statement answering the prescribed questions, and health examinations at a panel clinic. Processing commonly runs four to twelve weeks and is slower for first-time applicants from Nepal. You also need a Ministry of Education NOC from Nepal before you depart.
Working during and after study
In session: 48 hours per fortnight. Out of session: unlimited. Post-study: a Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) of two years for a bachelors or masters by coursework, longer for research degrees and for study in designated regional areas.
Frequently asked
1 How much money do I need in the bank to study in Australia?
You must show one year of tuition plus living costs (currently around AUD 29,710 for a single student) plus travel. In Nepali terms that is usually Rs 45–55 lakh, and the source of the funds matters as much as the amount.
2 Why are Australian student visas being refused for Nepali applicants?
Most refusals cite the Genuine Student requirement : the course does not follow logically from your academic or work history, or the financial evidence looks assembled rather than accumulated.
3 Can I work while studying in Australia?
Yes: 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.
4 Which intake should I apply for?
February is the main intake with the fullest course list. July is the sensible second choice; November exists but is limited.

"The Nepali students who do best in Australia are the ones who treat the financial file as seriously as the offer letter. Tuition and living costs are only half the story: the proof of funds and a clean visa history are what turn an admission into a granted visa."

What Nepali students say about Australia
"Moving to Australia felt overwhelming until I broke it into steps: test, offer, NOC, visa. Keeping every cost in NPR front and centre stopped me from losing track of the budget."
Asha P.
Studying in Australia
"I compared Australia against two other countries side by side. Seeing the post-study work rights and the proof-of-funds requirement together made the choice obvious."
