The honest picture
Germany is the only major destination where a full degree at a strong public university can cost effectively nothing in tuition : most public universities charge only a semester contribution of a few hundred euros. That single fact has made it the fastest-growing European destination for Nepali students.
Two things stand between the idea and the reality. The first is the blocked account: you must deposit roughly a year of living costs into a German blocked account before the visa is issued, and it is released to you monthly after arrival. The second is language. English-taught masters programmes exist and are genuinely English-taught, but German-taught bachelors degrees, the Ausbildung vocational route and the nursing pathway all need B1 or B2 German, which is a year of serious study before you apply.
The Ausbildung route deserves particular attention: it pays a training salary while you learn, leads directly to employment, and is far less crowded than the university route.

Tests Germany asks for
The visa route
Apply for the national D visa at the German Embassy in Kathmandu after receiving an admission letter. The file needs the admission letter, a blocked account confirmation (currently around EUR 11,904 for one year), language certificates, academic documents, health insurance and a motivation letter. Appointment waiting times are the bottleneck : book the slot as soon as you have an offer. Processing after the appointment commonly runs six to twelve weeks. A Ministry of Education NOC is required before departure.
Working during and after study
120 full days or 240 half days of work per year alongside study. After graduating, an 18-month residence permit to look for work, converting to an EU Blue Card or work permit on employment.
