What Goethe is
Germany draws Nepali students with tuition-free public universities and a well-defined Ausbildung (vocational training) route, and both need German. Ausbildung and nursing placements typically ask for B1 or B2; German-taught degrees ask B2 or C1; English-taught masters programmes ask none at application but expect A1 for daily life and for the visa interview. The Goethe-Zertifikat is the certificate German authorities recognise without argument.
Test format
Four modules — Lesen (reading), Hören (listening), Schreiben (writing) and Sprechen (speaking) — which at B1 and above can be taken and passed separately.
Where to take it
Goethe exams are held in Kathmandu at authorised partner institutes; the A1 and A2 sittings run most often.
Who asks for Goethe
| Destination | Typical requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 🇩🇪 Germany | B1–B2 for German-taught study and Ausbildung | English-taught masters programmes ask for IELTS instead, usually 6.5. |
Which level do you need?
Visa and university rules name a minimum level, for example B1 or B2. Confirm the exact level before enrolling so you study the right tier.
How the levels map
Levels follow the CEFR scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). A higher level proves more proficiency and unlocks more programmes.
Booking fixed test dates
These exams run on set dates, not continuously. Seats fill quickly in Kathmandu, so register as soon as your preparation plan is set.
