What JLPT is

Japan is consistently the second-largest destination for Nepali students, and the JLPT is the standard proof of Japanese ability. Levels run from N5 (basic) to N1 (fluent). A language school placement usually asks for N5, sometimes N4; a degree programme taught in Japanese generally wants N2 or above. The test is offered twice a year, in July and December, and demand in Kathmandu far exceeds seats — registration closes quickly.

Test format

Three sections at N4 and N5 (vocabulary, grammar & reading, listening) and two at N3 and above. There is no speaking or writing component. You must pass both the overall score and each section minimum.

Where to take it

JLPT is held in Kathmandu twice a year. Registration opens months in advance and seats sell out within days, so watch the announcement rather than the deadline.

Which level do you need?

Visa and university rules name a minimum level, for example B1 or B2. Confirm the exact level before enrolling so you study the right tier.

How the levels map

Levels follow the CEFR scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). A higher level proves more proficiency and unlocks more programmes.

Booking fixed test dates

These exams run on set dates, not continuously. Seats fill quickly in Kathmandu, so register as soon as your preparation plan is set.
