The honest picture
Japan is unusual among Nepali study destinations because most students do not go straight to a degree. The standard path is a one-to-two-year Japanese language school, followed by entry into a senmon gakko (vocational college) or a university once your Japanese reaches the required level. That structure keeps the initial cost far below Australia or Canada, and it is why Japanese language programmes are the single most common category on Nepal's NOC records.
The trade-off is language. Nothing about the route works without Japanese: N5 gets you into a language school, N2 gets you into a degree taught in Japanese, and part-time work : which most students rely on to cover living costs : is effectively closed to you below conversational level. Students who treat the language year as a formality tend to struggle badly in year two.
Japan also runs on a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) system: your school applies to immigration on your behalf before you ever visit an embassy, and the COE, not the visa, is the real decision point.
Why Japan
- Tuition well below the English-speaking destinations, especially at language schools and vocational colleges
- 28 hours a week of permitted part-time work, which realistically covers living costs
- A large, long-established Nepali community in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka
- Clear progression from language school to vocational college to university
- Strong graduate hiring in caregiving, IT, hospitality and manufacturing
Tests Japan asks for
The visa route
Your language school or university applies for a Certificate of Eligibility from the Immigration Services Agency on your behalf : this takes two to three months and is where most rejections happen. Once the COE is issued, you apply for the student visa at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu with the COE, admission letter, passport, photographs and financial documents; the embassy step usually takes about a week. A Ministry of Education NOC is required before departure.
Working during and after study
Up to 28 hours per week during term with permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence, and up to 40 hours per week during long school holidays. Post-study, graduates may switch to a designated activities visa to look for work, and then to a work visa.
Frequently asked
1 Do I need JLPT to study in Japan?
For a language school, N5 is the usual minimum and some schools accept NAT-TEST level 5 instead. For a degree taught in Japanese, N2 is the practical bar.
2 What is a Certificate of Eligibility?
A document your school obtains from Japanese immigration before you apply for the visa. It takes two to three months and is the real decision point : the embassy step afterwards is comparatively quick.
3 Can I cover my living costs by working in Japan?
Many students do, within the 28-hour weekly limit, but only once their Japanese is good enough to be hired. Do not plan the first six months around it.

"The Nepali students who do best in Japan are the ones who treat the financial file as seriously as the offer letter. Tuition and living costs are only half the story: the proof of funds and a clean visa history are what turn an admission into a granted visa."

What Nepali students say about Japan
"Moving to Japan felt overwhelming until I broke it into steps: test, offer, NOC, visa. Keeping every cost in NPR front and centre stopped me from losing track of the budget."
Asha P.
Studying in Japan
"I compared Japan against two other countries side by side. Seeing the post-study work rights and the proof-of-funds requirement together made the choice obvious."
