What TOPIK is
TOPIK grades Korean ability from level 1 to level 6 across two papers: TOPIK I (levels 1–2) and TOPIK II (levels 3–6). Korean universities generally ask for level 3 for undergraduate entry and level 4 for graduate study, though English-taught programmes waive it. Note the distinction that trips up a lot of applicants: EPS-TOPIK, run for the Employment Permit System, is a different test on a different calendar and does not substitute for TOPIK in a university application.
Test format
TOPIK I: listening and reading, about 100 minutes. TOPIK II: listening, writing and reading across two sittings totalling about 180 minutes. Your level is assigned from your total score rather than chosen in advance.
Where to take it
TOPIK is held in Kathmandu a few times a year through the Korean Education Centre. EPS-TOPIK is announced separately by EPS Korea Section, Nepal.
Who asks for TOPIK
| Destination | Typical requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 🇰🇷 South Korea | Level 3 undergraduate, level 4 graduate | Waived for English-taught programmes. EPS-TOPIK is a separate employment test. |
Which level do you need?
Visa and university rules name a minimum level, for example B1 or B2. Confirm the exact level before enrolling so you study the right tier.
How the levels map
Levels follow the CEFR scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). A higher level proves more proficiency and unlocks more programmes.
Booking fixed test dates
These exams run on set dates, not continuously. Seats fill quickly in Kathmandu, so register as soon as your preparation plan is set.
