What IELTS is
IELTS measures English across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and reports each on a 0–9 band scale plus an overall band. Two versions exist: Academic, taken by anyone applying to a university abroad, and General Training, used for migration and some work visas. Nepali students applying to Australia, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and most of Europe are asked for Academic. Computer-delivered sittings run several times a week in Kathmandu and results arrive in three to five days; paper-based sittings run a few times a month and take about thirteen days. A band is valid for two years from the test date.
Test format
Listening 30 minutes / 40 questions. Reading 60 minutes / 40 questions across three passages. Writing 60 minutes — Task 1 (150 words describing a chart, or a letter on General Training) and Task 2 (250-word essay). Speaking 11–14 minutes, face to face with an examiner, in three parts. Listening, Reading and Writing are sat back to back; Speaking may fall on a different day.
Where to take it
IELTS in Nepal is administered by the British Council and IDP. Test venues run in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar, Birgunj, Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi, though the schedule outside the valley is thinner — book early for a specific date.
Who asks for IELTS
| Destination | Typical requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 🇦🇺 Australia | 6.0–6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 | The university requirement and the student-visa requirement are set separately; the visa bar is usually lower. |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | 6.0–6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 | The Student Direct Stream historically required 6.0 in each band; check the current IRCC rule. |
| 🇺🇸 United States | 6.0–7.0 overall | Accepted alongside TOEFL by nearly all US universities. |
| 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | 6.0–6.5 overall, no band below 5.5 | Must be a UKVI (SELT) sitting where the course is below degree level. |
| 🇮🇳 India | No English test for most programmes | Nepali students are generally exempt; entrance exams such as NEET or JEE matter instead. |
| 🇩🇪 Germany | 6.5 overall for English-taught programmes | Only where the programme is taught in English. |
| 🇳🇿 New Zealand | 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5 | NZQA-approved English evidence is required for the student visa. |
| 🇮🇪 Ireland | 6.0–6.5 overall | Standard across Irish universities and institutes of technology. |
| 🇧🇩 Bangladesh | No English test for most MBBS seats | MBBS admission turns on NEB marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. |
| 🇩🇰 Denmark | 6.5 overall | Danish institutions also accept TOEFL and Cambridge certificates. |
| 🇵🇱 Poland | 6.0 overall | Many private universities accept a school-issued medium-of-instruction letter instead. |
Academic vs General Training
Most university offers ask for the Academic module. General Training is usually for migration or secondary-school entry. Pick the module your institution or visa office names, because the Reading and Writing tasks differ.
Computer-delivered vs paper-based
Both produce the same score. Computer delivery returns results faster and lets you type essays; paper suits those who prefer handwriting. Book the format your nearest centre offers.
What a good score looks like
Aim for the band your offer specifies, not a generic "high" score. Australian and UK universities commonly ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall with no band below 6.0. Check each institution's exact requirement before you book.

Frequently asked
1 What IELTS band do I need for Australia?
Most Australian universities ask for 6.0 to 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5 or 6.0. The student visa itself has a separate, usually lower, English requirement.
2 How long is an IELTS score valid?
Two years from the test date. Some universities apply their own, stricter recency rule.
3 Can I retake only one module?
Yes. IELTS One Skill Retake lets you re-sit a single module within 60 days of a computer-delivered test, where the receiving institution accepts it.
4 How long are IELTS scores valid?
Most English test scores are valid for two years from the test date. Plan your application so the score is still valid when you submit it.
5 Can I retake the test if I miss my score?
Yes. You can book another attempt; there is usually no limit, but check the waiting period and your deadline, then target the exact band your offer specifies.
6 Computer-delivered or paper-based — which should I choose?
Both give the same score. Computer delivery returns results faster and lets you type essays; paper suits those who prefer handwriting. Pick what your nearest centre offers.
7 How do I send my score to universities?
You nominate institutions when booking or afterwards, and reports are sent electronically to the schools you choose.
8 What score do I need for a student visa?
It depends on the country and course. Australia and the UK commonly ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall with no band below 6.0 — confirm the exact requirement with your institution and visa office.
