The honest picture
India remains the quiet giant of Nepali outbound study. It costs a fraction of any other destination, needs no English proficiency test, requires no student visa for Nepali citizens under the 1950 treaty, and is close enough to come home at the end of a semester. For MBBS, BDS, engineering and management, it absorbs more Nepali students than the numbers usually credit.
Admission is competition-driven rather than document-driven. MBBS seats run through NEET, engineering through JEE or state and institutional exams, and management through CAT, CMAT or institution-level tests. The work of applying to India is almost entirely exam preparation, which is a different discipline from the file-building that Australia or Canada demand.
The one procedural thing not to skip: you still need a Ministry of Education NOC from Nepal, and you will need an eligibility certificate from the relevant Indian council or university for professional courses.
Why India
- No student visa required for Nepali citizens, and no English proficiency test
- Tuition and living costs a fraction of any Western destination
- Degrees widely recognised in Nepal, including for professional council registration
- Close enough to travel home between semesters at reasonable cost
- Strong institutions for medicine, engineering, management and pharmacy
Tests India asks for
| Test | Typical requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS | No English test for most programmes | Nepali students are generally exempt; entrance exams such as NEET or JEE matter instead. |
The visa route
Nepali citizens do not require a student visa for India under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship. You travel on a passport or approved identity document. For professional courses you will usually need an eligibility certificate from the relevant Indian council or university, and a Ministry of Education NOC from Nepal is still required.
Working during and after study
Formal part-time work rights are limited and institution-dependent; most Nepali students in India are funded by family rather than by part-time work. Internships and stipendiary placements are standard in professional programmes.
Frequently asked
1 Do Nepali students need a visa for India?
No. Under the 1950 treaty Nepali citizens may study in India without a student visa, travelling on a passport or approved identity document.
2 How do I get an MBBS seat in India?
Through NEET. The score decides the seat, and both government and private colleges admit Nepali students on that basis.
3 Is a NOC needed for India?
Yes. The Ministry of Education NOC requirement applies to India as it does to any other destination.

"The Nepali students who do best in India are the ones who treat the financial file as seriously as the offer letter. Tuition and living costs are only half the story: the proof of funds and a clean visa history are what turn an admission into a granted visa."

What Nepali students say about India
"Moving to India felt overwhelming until I broke it into steps: test, offer, NOC, visa. Keeping every cost in NPR front and centre stopped me from losing track of the budget."
Asha P.
Studying in India
"I compared India against two other countries side by side. Seeing the post-study work rights and the proof-of-funds requirement together made the choice obvious."
