The honest picture
China is a scholarship destination more than a self-funded one. The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), Confucius Institute scholarships and a wide range of provincial and university awards fund a substantial proportion of the Nepali students who go, typically in medicine, engineering and Chinese language.
There are two entry routes. English-taught programmes : including the MBBS programmes that draw the most Nepali applicants : require no Chinese at admission but do expect HSK before graduation, and clinical years are much easier with it. Chinese-taught programmes require HSK 4 or 5 at admission, usually after a preparatory language year that the scholarship itself covers.
For MBBS specifically, verify that the university appears on the list recognised by the Nepal Medical Council before you accept anything. A degree from an unrecognised institution cannot be registered in Nepal, and that is discovered far too late by too many students.
Why China
- CSC and provincial scholarships that cover tuition, accommodation and a monthly stipend
- English-taught MBBS at a fraction of the cost of private medical education in Nepal or India
- Strong, well-funded engineering and technology universities
- Low living costs outside Beijing and Shanghai
- September intake, with a smaller March intake at some universities
Tests China asks for
| Test | Typical requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| HSK Usually required | HSK 4 for Chinese-taught programmes | Required for most CSC scholarships; English-taught programmes usually waive it. |
The visa route
After receiving an admission notice and a JW201 or JW202 form, apply for the X1 visa (for study over 180 days) at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu with the admission notice, JW form, passport, photographs, physical examination record and financial evidence. Within 30 days of arrival you convert the X1 into a residence permit. A Ministry of Education NOC is required before departure.
Working during and after study
Part-time work and internships require prior permission from both the university and the entry-exit authority, endorsed on the residence permit. Unauthorised work is treated seriously.
Frequently asked
1 Is MBBS in China recognised in Nepal?
Only from universities on the Nepal Medical Council's recognised list, and you must pass the NMC licensing examination on return. Verify the university against the list before accepting an offer.
2 Do I need HSK for an English-taught programme?
Not for admission, but most universities require a level before graduation and clinical or internship years are much harder without it.
3 What does the CSC scholarship cover?
Typically full tuition, on-campus accommodation, a monthly stipend and comprehensive medical insurance.

"The Nepali students who do best in China are the ones who treat the financial file as seriously as the offer letter. Tuition and living costs are only half the story: the proof of funds and a clean visa history are what turn an admission into a granted visa."

What Nepali students say about China
"Moving to China felt overwhelming until I broke it into steps: test, offer, NOC, visa. Keeping every cost in NPR front and centre stopped me from losing track of the budget."
Asha P.
Studying in China
"I compared China against two other countries side by side. Seeing the post-study work rights and the proof-of-funds requirement together made the choice obvious."
